Recommendations in Sysco Shop

Feature improvement for recommending personalized products to Sysco customers.

How might we help Sysco customers find more products to create a personalized shopping experience?

The “did you forget?” recommendation in the checkout experience was only one recommendation occurrence in the product initially. It served as the launchpad to add more recommendation types in Sysco Shop.

Our technical constraints included having a limited recommendation algorithm. The “did you forget?” recommendation type used the customer’s order history and frequency to suggest these products.

We decided to build an algorithm that would populate relevant products specific to the recommendation type.

How did I have an impact?

As lead product designer on the product discovery team, I was tasked to help strategize and define the initial requirements with the product manager and UX researcher for this project. Together, we created a vision for this project to be a robust product recommendation engine that would have mutliple touch-points in the customer’s journey within Sysco Shop. Additionally, I created wireframes, user flows, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs to communicate with stakeholders and engineers.

The recommendation engine and design allowed us to measure customer engagement, add to cart conversions, and defined a roadmap for feature improvements including other recommendation types.
